McMillan Frontrunner in City Campaign Cash

The latest campaign disclosures for the city mayor’s race show incumbent Mayor Johnny Piper still leading the pack in fundraising — only he’s not running.

Former House Majority Leader Kim McMillan holds a commanding lead in dollars raised among those who have picked up petitions, reporting $31,308.15 on hand.

That trails incumbent Mayor Johnny Piper’s remaining war chest of $53,744.73, money raised when he was considering running for a third term.

Only three other mayoral candidates — of which there are now 10 — filed campaign disclosures, according to documents provided by the Montgomery County Election Commission. Of them, Keith Fain reported the most cash on hand, $649.18.

Former City Councilman Gabe Segovia raised the most of the three in the period, $793.97, but had only $74.09 on hand at the filing deadline. Michael Flood reported $150 on hand.

Of those running for City Council, Ward 2 Councilwoman Deanna McLaughlin raised the most, reporting $1,728.56 on hand. She spent $1,858.99 during the period.

Councilman Bill Summers reported $1202.58 on hand for his reelection bid in Ward 10. Geno Grubbs, the Ward 7 councilman, reported $692.77.

For more on this story, see tomorrow's edition of The Leaf-Chronicle.

Kim McMillan and Madeline Rogero Shine at the Federation of Democratic Women National Convention

By Angela Danovi

Two Tennessee Democratic Women, Madeline Rogero and Kim McMillan, delivered remarks today at the National Convention of the National Federation of Democratic Women. McMillan spoke about the history of women in politics both locally and nationally. She also talked about her personal experiences as a candidate and former member of the Tennessee State Legislature, where she eventually became the first female House Majority Leader. McMillan shared a humorous story about being mistaken for an intern by a fellow legislator during her freshman term in the house. She said that the moment taught her to remain focused on the job she was elected to do, represent her constituents and serve on the committee for which she was appointed, rather than making a public scene of embarrassment for the chair of the committee. Ultimately, this decision led to a better working relationship with the chair and helped her to push forward her sponsored legislation! McMillan closed her speech by impressing upon the delegates the value of outworking her opponents. She stated that the support that she received from both women and men during her previous campaigns came not because she was woman but because she was the best candidate!

Kim McMillan will take her 12 years of legislative experience combined with her experience of serving in the Bredesen administration into the fall elections as she seeks to become the first female mayor of Clarksville!

Madeline Rogero, former and future candidate for Mayor of Knoxville also spoke at the National Convention of the National Federation of Democratic Women, this morning. Rogero talked about the importance of women supporting women in office while referencing her previous run for Mayor of Knoxville. She told an engaging story of getting permission from a supporter to put a sign up in her "half" of the yard because she was quietly supporting Rogero while the supporter's husband very vocally was not supporting her. Rogero also talked about the role that she and her campaign played in shaping the administration of her former opponent. She reiterated the need for civility and referenced herself as an example of a successful campaign that helped shape the agenda and administration of her former opponent. Rogero is looking forward to her 2011 mayoral campaign in Knoxville and if elected will become the first female Mayor of Knoxville!

McMillan Speaks to Clarksville Kiwanis Club

McMillan Speaks to Clarksville Kiwanis Club
Lee Erwin Reporting lee@clarksvillenow.com

Kim McMillan, candidate for Mayor of Clarksville spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Clarksville today. McMillan addressed the Kiwanis, setting a pair of crutches aside and standing at the podium with an injured leg that she said happened recently when she fell down the stairs. McMillan talked about her decision to drop out of the race for Governor of Tennessee and throw her hat in the ring as a candidate for mayor. McMillan “said someone recently asked if the mayor’s race was her second choice and she wanted to assure everyone in the room that it was not my second choice, it was my first choice, I just had to wait until the time was right to do it.” McMillan was referring to the March 30 announcement by Mayor Johnny Piper that he would not run for another term.

McMillan said on her decision to run for mayor, “she really believed she had more to offer by running for mayor, and hopefully being elected, to lead this city and take us to the next level.” McMillan added “Clarksville is a wonderful place to live and it will be my mission as mayor to make sure that everybody all across the state of Tennessee realizes how wonderful Clarksville is.”

McMillan was first elected to the State House of Representatives in 1994 and was the first woman in Tennessee history to become majority leader in 2002. She retired from the legislature in 2006 to serve on Governor Phil Bredesen’s cabinet before leaving in 2008 to take a job at Austin Peay State University. It was also that year that she formed a committee to look at a gubernatorial run.

McMillan drops out of governor's race

Kim McMillan announced today in an interview with The Leaf-Chronicle that she will drop out of the race for governor of Tennessee and will instead run for mayor of Clarksville.

The move was anticipated Monday in a report of a telephone poll forecasting a possible McMillan campaign for mayor, should she step out of her quest for the Democratic nomination for governor.

That decision came, she confirmed, after Johnny Piper announced he wouldn’t seek a third mayoral term.

“These last 24 hours have been very eventful,” McMillan said. “Over the last several weeks I’ve had a number of friends and others in the community contact me about the idea of running for mayor of Clarksville. I felt it was important to answer a call ... to serve the people of Clarksville, and to make Clarksville the best city it can be.

“I am excited about the opportunity, because I believe I have the qualities, and the experience. I think Clarksville can continue to do better, to rise up and be a major player on the state and national level.

“Clarksville is a city on the move. It continues to grow and gain recognition not only in the state, but nationally,” she said.

McMillan believes the state contacts she has made, including those during her campaign for governor, would serve her and Clarksville well in the mayor’s office.

The bid for governor started in 2008 when she first formed the campaign exploratory committee, canvassing the state to gauge public support.

“I have traveled across this state to listen to Tennesseans. I have given it my all,” she said.

The field of Democrats in the running was originally seven candidates, and then was narrowed to five, and finally down to two — herself and Mike McWherter of West Tennessee, son of former Tennessee Gov. Ned McWherter.

Prior to Wednesday’s interview with The Leaf-Chronicle, McMillan said she had a conversation with McWherter about her decision to drop out and run for Clarksville mayor.

“We had a very pleasant conversation,” McMillan said, but didn’t say whether she would campaign for McWherter in Clarksville.
