Kim McMillan, candidate for Mayor of Clarksville spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Clarksville today. McMillan addressed the Kiwanis, setting a pair of crutches aside and standing at the podium with an injured leg that she said happened recently when she fell down the stairs. McMillan talked about her decision to drop out of the race for Governor of Tennessee and throw her hat in the ring as a candidate for mayor. McMillan “said someone recently asked if the mayor’s race was her second choice and she wanted to assure everyone in the room that it was not my second choice, it was my first choice, I just had to wait until the time was right to do it.” McMillan was referring to the March 30 announcement by Mayor Johnny Piper that he would not run for another term.

McMillan said on her decision to run for mayor, “she really believed she had more to offer by running for mayor, and hopefully being elected, to lead this city and take us to the next level.” McMillan added “Clarksville is a wonderful place to live and it will be my mission as mayor to make sure that everybody all across the state of Tennessee realizes how wonderful Clarksville is.”

McMillan was first elected to the State House of Representatives in 1994 and was the first woman in Tennessee history to become majority leader in 2002. She retired from the legislature in 2006 to serve on Governor Phil Bredesen’s cabinet before leaving in 2008 to take a job at Austin Peay State University. It was also that year that she formed a committee to look at a gubernatorial run.
